Freezer Ragu

1 can crushed tomatoes ($1.19)
1 pound ground beef (approx $3)
3 carrots (89¢ for 1 bunch)
2-3 cloves of garlic, minced (50¢)
1 large onion (75¢)

Season beef with salt and pepper, brown in pot. Remove ground beef with slotted spoon, set aside. Cook onions and minced carrots in pan for around 10 minutes, or until the carrots are softening and the onions are beginning to brown. Add minced garlic, cook for a few minutes until the garlic becomes fragrant. Splash about 1/4 C water, chicken stock or cooking wine in the pan to deglaze any brown bits stuck to bottom. Add ground beef back to pan with any juices that accumulated on the plate. Add can of crushed tomatoes, simmer for 20 minutes. Season to taste with salt, pepper, crushed red pepper and any other seasonings you wish. Let cool, divide into freezer bags and freeze.

Grilled panzanella for Memorial Day. I also made lemon garlic chicken from the Williams-Sonoma outdoor living cookbook, but we were too busy rushing to the table for me to get a good picture. Next time I'll remove it from the pan and crisp it under the broiler separately because the pieces snuggling next to each other didn't get good color. It was delicious though.

I've never made panzanella before. I'm officially in love. Although I think I want more bread next time, considering I just wanted to dive in and eat every tomato and lemon vinagrette soaked piece of bread before moving on to the (delicious) grape tomatoes and grilled asparagus and onions.

ALSO made some white sangria with grapes, strawberries and apples soaked in rum for a day, and then my parents convinced my grandmother to eat one. THAT was fun.

Pork rib roast with a brown sugar/pepper glaze and roasted sweet potatoes with shallots and rosemary. I was going to make lemon sticky rolls but didn't want to spend two hours at midnight making the dough without my roommate's stand mixer.

I would like to host a party for the season finale of Lost. Since this is me, this will involve themed cooking. What kind of foods or drinks do you think would go best for a Lost-themed party?

So far I'm thinking a lot of island-themed foods. Grilled pork, of course, for the boar. Mangoes. Some kind of peanut butter dish. I'm going to try to get some Dharma beer. Anyone else have ideas, links to recipes, etc?

So I'm home with my parents for the weekend to work on my Projects and we go out to eat at Charlie and Jake's barbecue, and while we're eating I wax poetic about my dream of going to a barbecue festival and grazing on barbecue all day and then getting rolled out like Violet Beauregarde. But then my dad mentions that there's some upcoming barbecue/grilling festival that one of the guys that rents space in his storage yard is going to. Apparently you pay some registration fee and get to use a Big Green Egg and then when you go home the egg goes home with you.

Let me repeat - this several hundred dollar barbecue giant follows you home. So I get all excited, I'm thinking holy shit, I could totally enter, what would I make, I think smoked turkey and pulled pork, maybe I'll get to make some sort of punch, grill some vegetables. I can add barbecue champion to my resume!

And I get home and the festival is set during my vacation to LA. So I guess that just gives me time to prepare for next year.

Bouillabaisse pasta for dinner. Unfortunately four clams staunchly refused to open during cooking, but all the mussels were good sports. This is my first foray into French cuisine and I have to say I'm quite thrilled with the results.

I knew I would have trouble sleeping so I left instructions for my dad on arranging the ribs in the grill, but I still woke up around nine going DID HE READ THE EMAIL IS HE DOING IT CORRECTLY ARE THE RIBS IN IF HE DOESN'T PUT THEM ON THE GRILL NOW IT'LL BE LIKE SIX BY THE TIME THEY'RE DONE and so I dragged myself out of bed, walked out to the porch and saw him cleaning the grill and lighting the briquettes so I just toddled back to bed.

Any smoking tips, internet? I have done this a few times but I am still a novice.

I had some bizarre dream that I was living in a building with the guys from The Big Bang Theory and rooming with Penny (it wasn't the same building, that's why I said ai> building) and everyone was making too much noise and Sheldon came over to complain to us so I went and yelled at everyone that they were keeping everyone up with their noise, and being inconsiderate, and Dr. Camille Saroyan was off in the corner agreeing with me and backing me up and mid-rant I remembered that I needed to get up early on Tuesday (because this is apparently happening TONIGHT in chronological order because I DO need to get up early tomorrow) and I ran back to my little apartment and started putting together my school stuff and getting my coffee ready for the morning.

Tonight I went grocery shopping finally, and bought about six chicken breasts on sale.

I made grilled chicken breast with pseudo-jerk seasoning and seared carrots over pasta.

Today I walked around the corner of my building to see the bus leaving my bus stop and driving out onto the street. I had about a moment's hesitation before I hopped into my car and drove down to the next complex on the route, Tivoli, parked there and took the bus as it paused for its last stop.

Next week we're studying musicals in Theatre Survey, and apparently among other benchmark musicals to be discussed, we will be talking about two contemporary shows in particular: Les Miserables and Rent. It pains my little Renthead-loathing heart to hear my favorite and least-favorite-totally-overrated show spoken in the same breath. I would have put least-favorite with no reservations, but that kind of loathing I reserve for the Billy Joel musical and Li'l Abner. The Billy Joel musical is the kind of badness that you can't describe, and every number is more ludicrous than the next, including when murdered soldiers in Vietnam stand up to do a dance number. I honestly wish I were kidding. It was the worst shit I've ever seen on a stage - except Li'l Abner, WHICH I WAS IN.

I've been in an insane cooking mood this week. It's a shame and a blessing, because I'm trying to save money by not going out to eat. But I'm also trying to save money. So I shouldn't be buying more groceries. As indicated a few entries ago, I did make pierogies. 40 of them. About 2/3 had potato, cheese and sausage, and the other 1/3 had only potato and cheese. Bryan helped me roll out the dough, otherwise it would have taken me hours and hours. I mean, even more than it did anyway. I had some that night, two of them for lunch the next day, and then last night I brought about fifteen or so over to game night and fried them up for people to eat. I was thinking tonight that I wanted to make Swedish meatballs, since I have the ground chuck and the mix, but not enough egg noodles, but then I saw this recipe, and HOT DAMN. I may have to make a grocery run to get supplies for that. I don't know though - I should probably wait until my dad comes up to swap credit cards with me so I can con him into buying some groceries. Tonight I might just end up making my lazy pork barbecue again. Not that it's not good, but it's lazy. And easy.

I was away for the past few days back in Melbourne. On Friday, Ethan, Richard, Neil and I drove down so we could watch Tristan (the littlest Pemble, Ethan and Richard's brother) graduate. It was pretty cool, even though I only knew about five kids in that class and some assholes brought air horns. Apparently it's not love unless your love blasts out the eardrums of those around you. I bumped into a few of my old teachers: Mr. Bentley, Ms. Ladd, Ms. Jenkins and best of all, Schle. He was excited to see all of us, and remembered us all. After the ceremony we went back to the Pemble's for dessert with the family and then to Andretti to chaperone the Project Graduation lock-in. That really translates to "dick around with go-karts and putt-putt golf for free." Which we did, at length, and with Jackie, too!

The next day I woke up at 1:15, 45 minutes before my appointment to get my hair cut. I made it in time, and my hair is fantastic. Best comparison I can make is that it's Sister Maria hair from The Sound of Music. It's spectacular. I love it so much.

We drove back late Saturday night on rural roads, and hit a possum. I didn't see it happen so I can pretend it got away.

Today was a lazy, relaxed day. I went to Target to pick up some kitchen supplies and cloth napkins and ended up leaving with two extra things: a racerback bra and Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark on DVD. Then I came back here and made first Red Lobster Cheddar Bay biscuits (I've got the recipe down perfectly, I think), sausage-cheese balls for breakfast this week, and then chipotle-lime chicken and yellow rice for my dinner, which I'm now almost done eating at my desk.

In a little bit, if I have someone to keep me company, I might make pierogies to freeze for Wednesday's game night.
